Theatre Tickets and Tent Pegs

I’ve had two visits to the theatre in the last week. The first was to see Playboy of the Western World at the Old Vic. I loved the play, but not the production, and by half time I was wishing I’d stayed at home and just read it instead. Sinead Cusack was really good as the horny, scheming widow Quinn, but in an otherwise am-dram-esque cast she alone couldn’t justify the cost of the ticket and travelcard. A pre-show halloumi burger washed down with a pina colada are evidence that I didn’t dislike the play because I was grumpy-hungry or dry.

I was also underwhelmed by Di and Viv and Rose at The Hampstead Theatre. It was all a bit so bloomin’ what and did I feed the cat and pay the water rates ? I spent the second half fidgeting and wondering if a travel pillow could work in a theatre seat.

Sue Johnston (Royle Family) was sat near me in the audience and yes I know she is a national treasure and a truly class actress, but her complexion looks like someone (in a Harley street Clinic perhaps?) has pulled her tent pegs too tight……..

I have never been keen on Sue J ever since Brookside. She has had so much work done on her face and nose since then. No wonder she looks as you describe her!! xx
